What is HCG?
HCG stands for “Human Chorionic Gonadotropin,” a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. This hormone helps stabilize the metabolism through the hypothalamus, an area of the brain that regulates hunger, among many other functions.
Discovery of the HCG diet
The HCG diet was discovered by the endocrinologist, Simeons, in the 1950s in Italy. Dr. Simeons observed that overweight people who ate a diet that was low in carbohydrates and high in proteins mixed with the HCG hormone could lose weight more rapidly than with other methods.
Initially, Dr. Simeons observed the function of HCG in an investigation over pregnant women who had a daily diet ranging from 500 to 800 calories. He determined that the dissolution of the fat occurred naturally and thought that the treatment could be satisfactorily applied to patients who struggled with overweight. This hypothesis was submitted to tests, investigations and analyses, obtaining positive results in which the individuals lost weight rapidly.
Following the above mentioned research and discoveries, the HCG diet was born, after which, Dr. Simeons published the book Pounds and Inches, in which the endocrinologist attempted to show the HGC diet to the world and clear up all questions, fears and safety problems related to this treatment.
How does the HCG work?
Upon consuming HCG, the body begins to attack accumulated fat by accelerating the metabolism. Furthermore, the number of calories that the body needs is reduced, starting a process in which it will grow accustomed to consuming foods that are healthy and nourishing.
The HCG diet limits calorie consumption to 500 per day, which must be consumed in fruits, vegetables, seeds such as nuts, and grilled lean meat (not fried).
The HCG diet provides a structured menu that must be followed for every daily meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner). However, the patient has the opportunity to adjust each one of these meals according to his/her preference.
It is important for the patient not to exercise while on the HCG diet. Due to the fact that he/she only consumes 500 calories per day, any exercise would prevent the body from eliminating the fat that it stores as an energy reserve.
In order to obtain the desired results, it is important to follow the rules exactly. Otherwise, it will not be possible to receive all of the benefits that this diet provides.
The diet program has 3 stages:
- Treatment phase for losing weight and accumulated fat.
- Phase for maintaining the weight achieved in phase one.
- Phase for maintaining the achieved figure and weight for the entire duration of the diet.
HCG diet consumption forms
The HGC can be incorporated into the diet in the following forms:
- 1. HCG Drops
- 2. HCG Injections
The drops version is recommended due to ease of consumption; however, both forms are equally effective.
The HCG diet is for everyone!
The HCG diet can be for anyone, both men and women, including people with diabetes. This is due to the fact that it is a treatment consisting in the consumption of a natural hormone, accompanied by healthy foods.

Side effects of the HCG diet
If the diet is strictly followed, it is very rare for side effects to occur. Nevertheless, we recommend that the diet be supervised by a doctor who is specialized in the topic. To this effect, our medical specialist in the Anti Aging and Wellness Clinic will assist you during the entire period of the HCG diet so that you can have the confidence and assurance that this treatment will give you the desired results…
Some of the side effects that can occur are swelling in the hands and feet, slight stomachache, decrease in the quantity of urine, nausea, pelvic pain, upset stomach, acne, weight gain, enlargement of the penis and testicles, increase in the amount of pubic hair, and reddening of the skin, among others.
We reiterate that patients very rarely present side effects, and in the event that they do occur, they do not tend to be serious. If the diet is correctly followed, side effects do not usually occur in the individual; that is, the dangers of the HCG diet could exist if a patient is not following the diet and is not adequately supervised by his/her doctor.
At the Anti Aging and Wellness Clinic in San José, Costa Rica, we encourage our patients to research and participate in the forums related to the HCG diet. We recommend consulting information sources such as the HCG forums and YouTube, rather than media outlets, since the former sources provide real-life testimonies and experiences of people who have followed the diet or who are currently doing so.
